Some of the Psalms speak in a voice that does not even sound Christian, wishing hardship and vengeance on enemies.  What can we learn from these verses while we are also trying to love our enemies?  First we should hate, and not condone, evil and sin with a passion.  Through the inspiration of the Spirit we can understand the Lord's message in such verses.  The Joseph Smith translation of Psalm 109:4 (And, notwithstanding
my love, they are my adversaries; yet I will continue in prayer for them.) offers such an insight.
Also, we see how frequently David takes the challenges and concerns of his life to the Lord and petitions him for help. The Lord's answer to these prayers is in Old Testament, Psalms 89:19-28
"1  Lord, how are they increased that trouble
me! many are they that rise up against me. 2  Many there be which
say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. 3  But
thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine
head. 4  I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out
 of his holy hill. Selah. 5  I laid me down and slept; I awaked;
for the Lord sustained me. 6  I will not be afraid of ten
thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. 7
Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine
enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. 8
Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people.
Selah"
Old Testament, Psalms
3:1-8
"8  Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness
because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face."
Old Testament, Psalms
5:8
"7  Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it
waxeth old because of all mine enemies. 10  Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore
vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly."
Old Testament, Psalms
6:7,10
"1  O Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust:
save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: 2  Lest
he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none
to deliver."
Old Testament, Psalms
7:1-2
"3  When mine enemies are turned back, they
shall fall and perish at thy presence. 4  For thou hast
maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging
right. 5  Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the
wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever. 6  O
thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast
destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them."
Old Testament, Psalms
9:3-6
"7 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou
that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from
those that rise up against them. 8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide
me under the shadow of thy wings, 9 From the wicked that oppress me,
from my deadly enemies, who compass me about. 10 They are inclosed in
their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly. 11 They have now
compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the
earth; 12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a
young lion lurking in secret places. 13 Arise, O Lord, disappoint him,
cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword: 14
From men which are thy hand, O Lord, from men of the world, which have
their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid
treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their
substance to their babes."
Old Testament, Psalms 17:7-14
37 I have pursued mine enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were consumed. 38 I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they are fallen under my feet. 39 For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.
Old Testament, Psalms 18:37-39
"8  Thine hand shall find out all thine
enemies: thy right hand shall find out those that hate thee. 9
Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger: the
Lord shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them. 10
Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth, and their seed from
among the children of men. 11  For they intended evil against
thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to
perform. 12  Therefore shalt thou make them turn their back, when
thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of
 them."
Old Testament, Psalms
21:8-12
"23 Stir up thyself, and awake to my judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord. 24 Judge me, O Lord my God, according to thy righteousness; and let them not rejoice over me."
Old Testament, Psalms 35:23-24
"3  For strangers are risen up against me, and
oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them.
Selah 5  He shall
reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth. 7  For he hath delivered me out of all
trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies."
Old Testament, Psalms
54:3,5,7
"3  Because of the voice of the enemy, because
of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in
wrath they hate me. 4  My heart is sore pained within me: and
the terrors of death are fallen upon me. 5  Fearfulness and
trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. 6
And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away,
and be at rest. 7  Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in
the wilderness. Selah. 8  I would hasten my escape from the
windy storm and tempest. 9  Destroy, O Lord, and divide their
tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city. 10
Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and
sorrow are in the midst of it. 11  Wickedness is in the midst
thereof: deceit and  guile depart not from her streets. 12  For it was not an enemy that reproached me;
then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did
magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: 13
But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. 14
We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in
company. 15  Let death seize upon them, and let them go down
quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them."
Old Testament, Psalms
55:3-15

"1  Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would
swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresseth me. 2  Mine enemies
would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O
thou most High. 5  Every day they wrest my words: all their
thoughts are against me for evil. 6  They gather themselves
together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for
my soul. 7  Shall they escape by iniquity? in thine anger cast
down the people, O God."
Old Testament, Psalms
56:1-2,5-7
"4  My soul is among lions: and I lie even
among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are
spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. 6  They have prepared a net for my steps; my
soul is bowed down: they have digged a pit before me, into the midst
whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah 9  When I cry unto thee, then shall mine
enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me."
Old Testament, Psalms
57:4,6,9
"1  Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God:
defend me from them that rise up against me. 2   Deliver me from
the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men. 3  For,
lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me;
not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Lord. 4  They run and
prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.  10   The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God
shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies. 11  Slay them not,
lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O
Lord our shield. 13  Consume them in wrath, consume them, that
they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the
ends of the earth. Selah. 14  And at evening let them return; and
let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. 15
Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not
satisfied."
Old Testament, Psalms
59:1-410-11,13-15
"10  Wilt not thou, O God, which hadst cast us
off? and thou, O God, which didst not go out with our armies? 11
Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. 12
Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down
our enemies."
Old Testament, Psalms
60:10-12
"3  For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a
strong tower from the enemy. 4  I will abide in thy tabernacle
for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah"
Old Testament, Psalms
61:3-4
"1...preserve my life from fear of the enemy. 2
Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of
the workers of iniquity: 3  Who whet their tongue like a sword,
and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words: 4
That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot
at him, and fear not."
Old Testament, Psalms
64:1-4
"1  Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make
haste to help me, O Lord. 2  Let them be ashamed and confounded
that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to
confusion, that desire my hurt. 3  Let them be turned back for a
reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha."
Old Testament, Psalms
70:1-3
"4  Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of
the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. 10  For mine enemies speak against me; and they
that lay wait for my soul take counsel together, 11  Saying, God
hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for there is none to deliver
him. 13  Let them be confounded and consumed that
are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and
dishonour that seek my hurt. 24....for they are confounded, for they are brought
unto shame, that seek my hurt."
Old Testament, Psalms
71:4,10-11,13,24
"5  Thou feedest them with the bread of tears;
and givest them tears to drink in great measure. 6  Thou makest
us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among
themselves. 12  Why hast thou then broken down her
hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her? 13
The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field
doth devour it. 14  Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look
down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine; 15  And the
vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou
madest strong for thyself. 16  It is burned with fire, it is cut
down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance."
Old Testament, Psalms
80:5-6,12-16
"13  Oh that my people had hearkened unto me,
and Israel had walked in my ways! 14  I should soon have subdued
their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries."
Old Testament, Psalms
81:13-14
"14  O God, the proud are risen against me,
and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul; and have
not set thee before them. 17  Shew me a token for good; that they which
hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, Lord, hast holpen me,
and comforted me."
Old Testament, Psalms
86:14,17
"6  I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I
am like an owl of the desert. 7  I watch, and am as a sparrow
alone upon the house top. 8  Mine enemies reproach me all the
day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me."
Old Testament, Psalms
 102:6-8
"13  Through God we shall do valiantly: for he
it is that shall tread down our enemies."
Old Testament, Psalms
 108:13
"1  Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise; 2
For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened
against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue. 3
They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me
without a cause. 4(JST)  And, notwithstanding my
love, they are my adversaries; yet I will continue in prayer for them.
Old Testament, Psalms
 109:1-4
"1  The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at
my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool."
Old Testament, Psalms
 110:1
"7...therefore shall I see my desire upon them
that hate me. 10  All nations compassed me about: but in the
name of the Lord will I destroy them. 11  They compassed me
about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the Lord I will
destroy them. 12  They compassed me about like bees; they are
quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the Lord I will
destroy them. 13  Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall:
but the Lord helped me."
Old Testament, Psalms
 118:7,10-13
86 All thy commandments are faithful: they persecute me wrongfully; help thou me. 87 They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts. 88 Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.95 The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies. 121  I have done judgment and justice: leave me
not to mine oppressors. 122  Be surety for thy servant for
good: let not the proud oppress me. 134  Deliver me from the a oppression of man:
so will I keep thy precepts. 139  My a zeal hath consumed me, because mine
enemies have forgotten thy words. They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they
 are far from thy law. 157  Many are my persecutors and mine enemies;
yet do I not decline from thy testimonies. 161  Princes have persecuted me without a
cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word."
Old Testament, Psalms
 119:86-88, 95, 121.122,134,139,157,161

his mercy endureth for ever: 24  And hath redeemed us from our
enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever."

"1   Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man:
preserve me from the violent man; 2  Which imagine mischiefs in
their heart; continually are they gathered together for war. 3
They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is
under their lips. Selah. 4  Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of
the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to
overthrow my goings. 5  The proud have hid a snare for me, and
cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for
me. Selah."
Old Testament, Psalms
 140:1-5

whilst that I withal escape."
Old Testament, Psalms
 141:10
"3  For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he
hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in
darkness, as those that have been long dead. 9  Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies: I
flee unto thee to hide me. 12  And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and
destroy all them that afflict my soul: for I am thy servant."
Old Testament, Psalms
 143:3,9,12
"5  Bow thy heavens, O Lord, and come down:
touch the mountains, and they shall smoke. 6  Cast forth
lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them. 7
Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters,
from the hand of strange children; 8  Whose mouth speaketh
vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood. 10  It is he that giveth salvation unto
kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword. 11
Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth
speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:"
Old Testament, Psalms
 144:5-8,10-11
One of the challenges David faced was slander.  Personally, he understood how guarding words helped one guard their actions.

Old Testament, Psalms 141:3-4
"1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. 2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. 3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,"
Old Testament, Psalms 39:1-3

"1...preserve my life from fear of the enemy.2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity: 3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words; 4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not."
Old Testament, Psalms 64:1-4

69 The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart."
Old Testament, Psalms 119:69
