Scriptures and More

Psalms 19 and 119 talk about God's law and statutes but in today's vocabulary we could use the word scripture.  These Psalms describe the blessings and help which comes from diligent scripture study.

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.  111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the a rejoicing of my heart.
Old Testament, Psalms 119:105,111

"7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward."Old Testament, Psalms 19:7-11

"1 Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world: 2 Both low and high, rich and poor, together.  My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. 4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp."
Old Testament, Psalms 49:1-4

"24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors."
Old Testament, Psalms 119:124

29 Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously. 30 I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me. 31 I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O Lord, put me not to shame. 32 I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.
Old Testament, Psalms 119:29-32

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. 34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. 35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight. 36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. 38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. 40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness. 41 Let thy mercies come also unto me, O Lord, even thy salvation, according to thy word.
Old Testament, Psalms 119:33-36,38, 40-41

52 I remembered thy judgments of old, O Lord; and have comforted myself. 54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
Old Testament, Psalms 119:52,54

72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
Old Testament, Psalms 119:72

Old Testament, Psalms 119:81

97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. 98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. 103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Old Testament, Psalms 119:97,98,103

113 I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.
Old Testament, Psalms 119:113

129 Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them. 130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. 131 I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.
Old Testament, Psalms 119:129-131

140 Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.

This verse beautifully describes the Book of Mormon.

There are some wonderful verses about family and teaching your children in the Psalms.

Old Testament, Psalms 68:5-6 "God setteth the solitary in families:"

"1 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: 3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. 5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: 6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:"
Old Testament, Psalms 78:4-7  See also D&C 68:25-28

"41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock. 42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. 43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord"
Old Testament, Psalms 107:41-43
Old Testament, Psalms 127:3-5"3 Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. 4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. 5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate."

Old Testament, Psalms 113:9"9 He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children"

Anciently, God's miraculous power and the faith of his people was displayed through the Exodus.  Accounts of the Exodus were remembered and taught through the observance of the Passover. With a similar passion we as latter-day saint remember and teach the accounts of our pioneer ancestors in their exodus.   The Psalms tells the story of the Exodus through the following references.
