Messianic Psalms

The book of Psalms is quoted more by Christ than any other book in the Old Testament. Some of the quotes could certainly be because He knew and loved the scriptures so much but others are clearly the fulfillment of Messianic prophecies. Psalm 22 and 69 describes the intensity of the atonement and helps us better appreciate what Christ has done for all of us.

"1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? 2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent."
Old Testament, Psalms 22:1-2

"6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. 7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him."
Old Testament, Psalms 22:6-8

"9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts. 10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly. 11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. 13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me."
Old Testament, Psalms 22:9-17

"18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture."
Old Testament, Psalms 22:18

"19 But be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my strength, haste thee to help me. 20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns."
Old Testament, Psalms 22:19-21

"30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. 31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this."
"1  Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. 2  I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. 3  I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God. 4  They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away."
Old Testament, Psalms 69:1-4

"7  Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face. 8  I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children upon me. 10  When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach. 11  I made sackcloth also my garment; and I become a proverb to them. 12  They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards. 13  But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Lord, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation. 14  Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. 15  Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me."
Old Testament, Psalms 69:7-15 See John 2:17, Matt 12:46-50, Luke 22:42

"19  Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee. 20  Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. 21  They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink."
Old Testament, Psalms 69:19-21 John 19:28,29

"5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth."
Old Testament, Psalms 31:5

"20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken."
Old Testament, Psalms 34:20

"9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is‍ my refuge, even‍ the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
New Testament, Luke 4:10-11

"22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. 23 This is the Lord ’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes."

"26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord."
Old Testament, Psalms 118:26
 New Testament, Matthew 21:9

"2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger."
 Old Testament, Psalms 8:2
New Testament, Matthew 21:15-16

1  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name ’s sake."
Old Testament, Psalms 23:1-3
I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
New Testament, John 10:14-15

Psalms 113 through 118 and 132 are traditionally sung at the Passover.  It is possible that Christ sang them before going to the Garden of Gethsemane.
Mark 14:26

"12  What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? 13  I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. 14 I will pay my vows unto the Lord‍ now in the presence of all his people."
Old Testament, Psalms 116:12-14

The following psalms are used to describe Christ in Handel's Messiah.  Some of the translation is different then in the KJV.

"7 All they that see him laugh him to scorn: they shoot out the lips, they shake the heads, saying, 8 He trusted in God that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, if he delighted in him."

"20 Thy rebuke  hath broken his Heart; He is full of heaviness: He looked for some to have pity on him, but there was no man; neither found he any to comfort him."
Old Testament, Psalms 69:20

"But Thou didst not leave his South in Hell, nor didst Thou suffer the Holy One to see Corruption."
Old Testament, Psalms 16:10

"7 Lift up your Heads, O ye Gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting Doors, and the King of Glory shall come in.  8 Who is the King of Glory?  The Lord Strong and Mighty, the Lord Mighty in Battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O ye Gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting Doors, and the King of Glory shall come in.  10 Who is the King of Glory?  The Lord of Hosts: He is the King of Glory."
Old Testament, Psalms 24:7-10

"Thou art gone up on High; Thou hast led Captivity captive, and received Gifts for Men, yea even for thine Enemies, that the Lord God might dwell among them."
Old Testament, Psalms 68:18

"The Lord gave the Word; Great was the Company of the Preachers."
Old Testament, Psalms 68:11

"Why do the Nations so furiously rage together?  and why do the People imagine a vain Thing?  The Kings of the Earth rise up, and the Rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his Anointed. Let us break their Bonds assunder, and cast away their Yokes from us.  He that dwelleth in Heaven shall laugh them to scorn; The Lord shall have them in Derision. Thou shalt break them with a Rod of Iron, Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a Potter's Vessel,"
Old Testament, Psalms 2:1-4,9

  1. Paul uses Psalms 2:7 in Hebrews 1:5 in explaining the truth of Jesus being the only begotten son of Heavenly Father.
