Praise

When we praise something we recognize the good and tell others about it.  When we praise God we recognize His goodness and we testify of that to others.  The process we go through as we praise God fills us with gratitude, increases our faith, and further defines our testimony of the Lord as we share our praise with others.  Praise happens when we bear our testimonies of the Lord. More than anything else, the Psalms are full of praise.

"9  O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!"
Old Testament, Psalms 8:9

"46  The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted."
  Old Testament, Psalms 18:46

"3  And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord."
Old Testament, Psalms 40:3

"5  Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. 6  Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us. 7  God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him."
Old Testament, Psalms 67:5-7

"19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah."
Old Testament, Psalms 68:19

"4  Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified."
Old Testament, Psalms 70:4

"28  But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works."
Old Testament, Psalms 73:28

"13  So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations."
Old Testament, Psalms 79:13

"12  I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore."
Old Testament, Psalms 86:12

"9  O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.10  Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously. 11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. 12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice. 13 Before the Lord: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth."
Old Testament, Psalms 96:9-13  See D&C 128:23

"7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. 8 Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together 9 Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity."
Old Testament, Psalms 98:7-9

"1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
Old Testament, Psalms 103:1-5

"20  Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. 21  Bless ye the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. 22  Bless the Lord, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the Lord, O my soul."
Old Testament, Psalms 103:20-22

1 Praise‍ ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth‍ for ever.
2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who‍ can shew forth all his praise?

"30  I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude."
Old Testament, Psalms 109:30

"1  O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. 2  For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye the Lord"
Old Testament, Psalms 117:1-2

"17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord‍ hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death. 19  Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord: 20  This gate of the Lord, into which the righteous shall enter. 21  I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation."
Old Testament, Psalms 118:17-21

"13  With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. 14  I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches."
Old Testament, Psalms 119:13-14

"46  I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed."
Old Testament, Psalms 119:46
This is what Paul did in the New Testament  "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth."  Romans 1:16

"12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Zion.  13 For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee.  14 He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat. 15 He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth: his word runneth very swiftly."
Old Testament, Psalms 147:12-15

Many of the Psalms speak of praise happening continuously.  It is described that same way in the Book of Mormon.  Praise then becomes the attitude we carry, the self-talk in our thoughts and the constant prayer in our heart.  It makes me think of the full-time missionaries who have the opportunity to tell people all day long their testimonies of the Lord.

"And they did sing praises unto the Lord; yea, the brother of Jared did sing praises unto the Lord, and he did thank and praise the Lord all the day long; and when the night came, they did not cease to praise the Lord." Ether 6:9

"11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;12 To the end that my‍ glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord‍ my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever."
Old Testament, Psalms 30:11,12

"1 I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together."
Old Testament, Psalms 34:1-3

18 I will give thee thanks in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people.  27  Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant. 28  And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long."
Old Testament, Psalms 35:18,27,28

"16  Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified."
Old Testament, Psalms 40:16  Old Testament, Psalms 70:4

"8 O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard: 16 Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul. 17 I cried unto him with my mouth, and he was extolled with my tongue.""
Old Testament, Psalms 66:8,16,17

"11 The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it."
Old Testament, Psalms 68:11

"14  But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more. 15  My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof. 16  I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.17 O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. 18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. 19 Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!"
 Old Testament, Psalms 71:14-19

"1 Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare."
Old Testament, Psalms 75:1

"1 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth. 2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: 3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. 5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: 6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: 7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:" See also D&C 68:25-28
Old Testament, Psalms 78:1-7

"1 O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people."
Old Testament, Psalms 105:1

"1 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,.. 21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! 22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing"
Old Testament, Psalms 107:1,2, 21-22

"1  Praise ye the Lord. Praise, O ye servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord.2  Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and for evermore.3  From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord ’s name is to be praised."
Old Testament, Psalms 113:1-3

"26 I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes. 27 Make me to a understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.  My tongue shall speak of thye word: for all thy commandments are righteousness."
Old Testament, Psalms 119:26-27,172

At times, praise is something musical we sing and perform.  See the page Praise through Music to see these references.

  1. Gratitude seems to be the beginning of so many virtues....faith, patience, humility, charity. It is also the beginning of praise. I hope gratitude can become second nature for me.
