Trials

Within the Psalms are descriptions of trials showing their intensity along with the thoughts of faith we can have as we work through the challenges of life. Sometimes we think suffering is ours alone but such descriptions span all time as shown through the included reference from the D&C.   Some of these References are also Messianic Psalms.  Since He took on all our pain and sins, these verses also describe what Christ has done for us.

O God, where art thou? And where is the pavilion that covereth thy hiding place? 2 How long shall thy hand be stayed, and thine eye, yea thy pure eye, behold from the eternal heavens the wrongs of thy people and of thy servants, and thine ear be penetrated with their cries?Yea, O Lord, how long shall they suffer these wrongs and unlawful oppressions, before thine heart shall be softened toward them, and thy bowels be moved with compassiontoward them? O Lord God Almighty, maker of heaven, earth, and seas, and of all things that in them are, and who controllest and subjectest the devil, and the dark and benighted dominion of Sheol—stretch forth thy hand; let thine eye pierce; let thy pavillion be taken up; let thy hiding place no longer be covered; let thine ear be inclined; let thine heart be softened, and thy bowels moved with compassion toward us. Let thine anger be kindled against our enemies; and, in the fury of thine heart, with thy sword avenge us of our wrongs. Remember thy suffering saints, O our God; and thy servants will rejoice in thy name forever.
D&C 121 1-6

"1  O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. 2  Have mercy upon me, O Lord; for I am weak: O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed. 3  My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O Lord, how long? 4  Return, O Lord, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake. 5  For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? 6  I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears."
Old Testament, Psalms 6:1-6

"1  How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord ? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? 2  How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? 3  Consider and hear me, O Lord my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; 4  Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved. 5  But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation."
Old Testament, Psalms 13:1-5

"7  Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.8  Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life."
Old Testament, Psalms 42:7-8

"17 yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.18  Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;19  Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. 20  If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; 21  Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. 22  Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. 23  Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever. 24  Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression? 25  For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.26  Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies’ sake."
Old Testament, Psalms 44:17-26

"15  And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me."
Old Testament, Psalms 50:15

Old Testament, Psalms 56:8

"13  For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?"
Old Testament, Psalms 56:13

"1  Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. 2  I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. 3  I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God. 4  They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.14  Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. 15  Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.""
Old Testament, Psalms 69:1-4, 14,15

Old Testament, Psalms 70:5

Old Testament, Psalms 71:9.20

"21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins. 22 So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee. 26  My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."
Old Testament, Psalms 73:21,22,26

"2  In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.3  I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.4  Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak."
Old Testament, Psalms 77:2-4

"5 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times. 6 I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search. 7  Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more? 8  Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? 9  Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah. 10  And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High. 11  I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.12  I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings."
Old Testament, Psalms 77:5-12

"3  Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. 4  Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked. 5  They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course."
Old Testament, Psalms 82:3-5

"3  For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. 4  I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength: 5  Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand. 6  Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. 7  Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. 8  Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth. 9  Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction:"
Old Testament, Psalms 88:3-9

"14  Lord, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? 15  I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. 16  Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off. 17  They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together. 18  Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness."
Old Testament, Psalms 88:14-18

"1  Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my cry come unto thee. 2  Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily. 3  For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth. 4  My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread. 5  By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin.""
Old Testament, Psalms 102:1-5

Old Testament, Psalms 7:9

"5  Behold his eyelids shall try the children of men, and he shall redeem the righteous, and they shall be tried. The Lord loveth the righteous
Joseph Smith Translation, JST, Psalms 11:5

"10  For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.11  Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins.12  Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place."
Old Testament, Psalms 66:10-12

"7  Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah"
Old Testament, Psalms 81:7

"15  Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. 16  Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. 17  And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it."
Old Testament, Psalms 90:15-17

Some of our trials are a consequence of our sin.  From such we need to repent and rely upon the wondrous mercy of the Lord.

"12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. 13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer."
Old Testament, Psalms 19:12-14

"7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O Lord. 8 Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. 9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. 11 For thy name ’s sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great. 15 Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. 16 Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted. 17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses. 18 Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins."
Old Testament, Psalms 25:7-9,11,15-18

"1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.  3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.  4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah. 5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah"
Old Testament, Psalms 32:1,3-5

"1 O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.  2 For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. 3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. 4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. 5 My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.  6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. 7 For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. 8 I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. 9 Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. 10 My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. 11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off. 12 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. 13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. 14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. 17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. 18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin."
Old Testament, Psalms 38:1-14, 17-18

"7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee. 8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish."
Old Testament, Psalms 39:7-8

"12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.  13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me."
Old Testament, Psalms 40:12-13

"4 I said, Lord, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee."
Old Testament, Psalms 41:4

"1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.  7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.  8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.  9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.  10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.  11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.  12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.  13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.  14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness."

Old Testament, Psalms 119:67

"3 If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand ? 4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. 7 Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. 8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities."
Old Testament, Psalms 130:3-4,7-8

"1 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2 O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. 3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever."
Old Testament, Psalms 136:1-3
